Quick Draw

Diane's commission
throughout the year, artists at Spindleworks get commissioned to do certain works. There have been large wooden screens painted, curtains woven, and superhero sculptures created. Indeed the spindleworks artists are well known in the Maine community! This spring Diane got a commission to do a LARGE painting, bigger than anything she had done before (other than her 4 panel wooden screen). The interested customer had seen her work on the Berenberg Gallery website and hoped to purchase something really BIG of hers, so Jonathan built her a 3 x 4 foot canvas! working from a smaller sketch, Diane transfered the idea to the canvas, first in pencil, then oil pastel, and finally acrylic. Voila!

Spindleworks art: It's SMASHING!
Working in the ceramics studio, "Senter Place" (named after a grant from the Senter Fund), is a highlight of the summer on Lincoln street. Unfortunately this spring when we opened the doors to the studio we were met by a substantial mold problem and have not been able to access the space. Nonetheless, we are forging ahead with clay related projects. Today in advance of our recyling show in July the artists have been smashing old clay works to be remade into mosaics. Its hazy, hot and humid but there's nothing like weilding a hammer to make it all ok.

Art Mystery Tours

With the return of kinder weather, Art Mystery Tours have returned to the Spindleworks program. Several times during the month we set off on adventures to visit local artist studios, gallerys and other destinations for inspiration. This month we visited the weaving studio of Michael Patterson. He kindly invited us into his small, packed studio on pleasant street and talked about his work to a handful of Spindleworks weavers. Here Michael shows Grace one of his pieces.

spring has sprung into summer!

Oh my, its been so busy at Spindleworks we have not posted for months! But busy is good, and there are so many exciting projects and adventures going on. One of the great victories of this spring is that Earl has finished his car (a two year project)! Watch out Brunswick, here we come!
