our annual holiday potluck!

It was nice to see all the volunteers come back and enjoy our holiday potluck luncheon. Thanks to Terry Grasse for starting this tradition again for us -- every year he makes a good vegetarian hubbard squash! Nice to have the volunteers come and help us with what we do and for everyone to get together, bring food, every year. Hope we have it every year. I like the volunteers have different things to show us and it's a wonderful day to come here and that's it.

Happy Holidays and New Year to all,
-Kim C.

MY STORY ABOUT MY ARTWORK

This summer, I went on a field trip to Creative Trails with Spindle works in Portland. I also did a piece of artwork called mapping that has different pictures of different kinds of books with different pages in magazines & National Geographic magazines to cut-out & glue them down on a piece of white paper. I really liked the garden show here @ Spindle works & one of my pieces of artwork got sold. My favorite part of the art show was the art on the wall downstairs in the hall. I really like the lawn ornaments band. I like doing pottery with Sara in the clay studio. In August of 2008, I went with Spindle Works to go on a field trip to Louise's house for a end of the summer cookout. My favorite part was when Jonathan accidently set off the smoke alarm & it was quite funny when there was no smoke.

Summer work of Kim

This summer I did a play called Circus D M I like it all and had fun. If you want some copies call Spindle works for it. I have a portfolo off my work and if anyone would like to look at and have a art studio and would like to show my work and if you can't come to see it I have a CD off my work and here is the number is 725-8820. thank you. I am making a shaggy rug too. I like to come here and it help me alot and it teach me how to do a lot off thing to. I did a movie called High Noon and you can see it on the website call youtube.com/Spindleworks

FLOCK

For the last couple of weeks a bunch of us have been going down to Portland to collaborate with our friends at Creative Trails and Creatve Work Systems. This is the second annual get together, a follow up to MERGE. This year, we have been creating community by creating a huge FLOCK of birds in various media. Here, Anna is making a collage bird out of buttons and sequins.
The resulting work from this great meeting of the creative minds will be on display in the Creative Trails Fusion Gallery for the month of August. The opening reception is August 1st, as part of the Artwalk in Portland, 5-8pm, 369 Forest Ave.

Quick Draw

A great show in the gallery this month...fresh drawings from a year's worth of drawing classes. pencil sharpeners, accordians, tools, silverware, animals...you name it.

Diane's commission

throughout the year, artists at Spindleworks get commissioned to do certain works. There have been large wooden screens painted, curtains woven, and superhero sculptures created. Indeed the spindleworks artists are well known in the Maine community! This spring Diane got a commission to do a LARGE painting, bigger than anything she had done before (other than her 4 panel wooden screen). The interested customer had seen her work on the Berenberg Gallery website and hoped to purchase something really BIG of hers, so Jonathan built her a 3 x 4 foot canvas! working from a smaller sketch, Diane transfered the idea to the canvas, first in pencil, then oil pastel, and finally acrylic. Voila!

Spindleworks art: It's SMASHING!

Working in the ceramics studio, "Senter Place" (named after a grant from the Senter Fund), is a highlight of the summer on Lincoln street. Unfortunately this spring when we opened the doors to the studio we were met by a substantial mold problem and have not been able to access the space. Nonetheless, we are forging ahead with clay related projects. Today in advance of our recyling show in July the artists have been smashing old clay works to be remade into mosaics. Its hazy, hot and humid but there's nothing like weilding a hammer to make it all ok.
(in this picture, Donald, Kim and Diane smash old clay pieces to bits under the safety of an old wool blanket)

Sara and Terri sort through the pieces...

Art Mystery Tours

With the return of kinder weather, Art Mystery Tours have returned to the Spindleworks program. Several times during the month we set off on adventures to visit local artist studios, gallerys and other destinations for inspiration. This month we visited the weaving studio of Michael Patterson. He kindly invited us into his small, packed studio on pleasant street and talked about his work to a handful of Spindleworks weavers. Here Michael shows Grace one of his pieces.

spring has sprung into summer!

Oh my, its been so busy at Spindleworks we have not posted for months! But busy is good, and there are so many exciting projects and adventures going on. One of the great victories of this spring is that Earl has finished his car (a two year project)! Watch out Brunswick, here we come!
